About Thessaloniki

Thessaloniki , historically also known as Salonika, is the capital of Northern Greece and the second largest city in the country. It is also the second most important town after Athens.
The city was founded around 315 BC by the Macedon King Cassander, who named it after his beloved wife Thessalonike, sister of Alexander the Great. She was daughter of Philip II and princess of Macedon.
Thessaloniki has many ancient monuments revealing its past glories, as well as its present flourishing state.

• The Triumphal Arch of Galerius Caesar, Roman Emperor

• The Medieval Fortress of the city

• The Church of Saint Demetrius. He was a Christian martyr, who lived in the early 4th century, and was said to have been held prisoner and executed here.The first church on the spot was constructed in the early 4th century AD and later it was reconstructed as a five-aisled basilica in 634.

• Free time to make a promenade and go shopping. At 18.00h departure for Sofia.
